UMC was created in 2010 by the NFPHC Establishment Act and functions independently of the District Government to provide essential healthcare services to the area.
UMC’s history, which began in 1966 as the 380-bed Morris Cafritz Memorial Hospital, demonstrates its dedication to the community. It changed over time, becoming the Greater Southeast Community Hospital in 1974 and adding a nursing home and medical center to its offerings in 1980 and 1983, respectively. It changed its name to United Medical Center in 2008. In 2010, UMC found a permanent home as a significant asset to the District of Columbia government, following many ownership transfers between 1999 and 2010.
